Saving a Cobblestone???
This house at 824 County Route 238 (Old Pre-emption Road) was early occupied by D. Van Patten, according to the 1853 map of Wayne County. It was built in the 1840s of field cobbles gathered from the farm. At one time is was the home of Roy Gardner. In the 1960s Mr. and Mrs. Lee Bauer resided there. It is now unoccupied. Richard Palmer blog.
Looking at the Past - The former "Bauer" Cobblestone home/farm located at 824 Pre-emption Road in Lyons, NY, was built in the 1840's. The exact date still remains unclear. (We are hoping the date will be on the wall behind the white attached building, removal in the future). We do know it was constructed from actual stones from the farm. The farm land was purchased on June19, 1807 by Joseph Ennis from the Pultney Estate. 67 acres and 72 rods of land.
Looking at the Present - The once beautiful cobblestone has had several owners for the past 180 + years. Including Teller & Bradley families in the mid-late 1850's, Van Patten, Gardner, and several Bauer family members. The 19th century cobblestone was abandoned around 2007/2008. Over the course of this abandonment, and the state the cobblestone was left in, the value of the cobblestone dropped to approximately $25,000. At one time it was valued at over $150,000.
Looking to the Future - Purchased by Ed Schoen and his business partner, the cobblestone has been renamed "Cobblestone Run". The two have a history of creating beautiful log homes. However, they needed a new challenge. Mr. Schoen is estimating that this will be a 3 year project to restore this once stunning cobblestone home. He states that he can envision a Cobblestone Run Bed & Breakfast, possibly a venue for weddings, a home for a growing family, maybe even ??? The possibilities are endless. As of today, the house has had 80% of the windows replaced, a new roof installed, and both chimneys had to be removed along with the flooring. All debris on the land, unstable barns, a side building, and the debris that was abandoned in the home has been removed. The back room flooring has been successfully installed, and many other repairs continue to take place daily. Linda M. Guest, Lyons Town Historian. Linda later commented in a 4/7/2025 email "I believe renovations did stop awhile back."
